New growth (candles): Target these for controlling growth direction and promoting lower branching in spring.Crossing/rubbing branches: Remove branches that rub against each other to prevent damage and disease.Dead or diseased branches: Prune these to improve air circulation and overall tree health.Branches growing inwards: These detract from the desired shape and can crowd the center. Remove them to open up the canopy.Upward shoots: These can disrupt the cascading or windswept form desired for a Thunderhead pine. Prune them during late fall/winter to maintain the desired shape.
